- The dark blue metamorphic rock known as lapis lazuli, or simply lapis, has been treasured for its rich hue since ancient times and is used to manufacture semi-precious gemstones. Lazurite, sodalite, white calcite, pyrite, and a rich medium to royal blue pyrite with golden specks combine to make this rock, which is composed of several different minerals. Laurite, a silicate mineral that is a member of the sodalities group, is the main cause of its blue tint.
- Depending on the composition, lapis lazuli ranges from a Mohs rating of 5 to 6. Fair is the rating for its hardness. In order to serve as a decorative and healing tool, a 300 chip lapis lazuli tree has been expertly crafted.
